Title: Design for Integration

Outline: Discusses the notion of design for integration as a technique for reducing development risk.

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this session students will be able to:
  • Discuss why it is important to understand the environment in which integration will take place and structure the engineering organisation accordingly.
  • List the different layers of an interface and steps in communicating across an interface.
  • Summarise the specific practises of the CMMI® level 3 process area of Product Integration.
  • Apply systems engineering to the task of systems integration.
  • List a wide range of types of interfaces and interfacing that have to be considered and discuss the importance of using multidisciplinary teams.  
  • Discuss where systems integration often goes wrong and steps that can be taken to reduce this likelihood.
  • Discuss how the use of standards can help reduce systems integration problems.
  • Discuss areas and priority of design focus so as to reduce systems integration problems.
